What causes it?
Cats are wired to hide pain
In the wild, looking weak meant danger — so cats instinctively mask pain. By the time a guardian notices something, disease is often already advanced.
Chronic kidney disease and thyroid
The two most common conditions in senior cats. Early on, the only change may be 'drinking a bit more water' — only blood and urine tests catch them early.
Heart disease (HCM)
It can hide in cats who look completely healthy, and auscultation alone can miss it — which is why an ultrasound check is worthwhile.

Kidney (including SDMA), liver, glucose, thyroid values, and urine concentrating ability.

X-ray and abdominal ultrasound for kidneys, bladder, and digestive organs.

Step 5. Echocardiography (optional)
Heart muscle thickness for pedigree cats or when a murmur is heard.
